The Case For Goalie Number 3
Camp number one is in the books, and the first signs of what will become of the 2007-2008 Oakland University Hockey squad as are well. One of the burning questions, besides
who will fill the void of Star Will McMahon is who will become the teams number three netminder. Grizzlies Head Coach Sean Hogan has confirmed that the team will carry three
goalies next season and the question remains who will that be?
Collin Chase will once again be the Grizzlies starter after leading the way to the 2007 ACHA D1 National Championship and Andrew Hansen should be the number two guy
between the pipes. To find the number three goalie you may not have to look far. The Division Three team features two goalies poised to make DI both Andrew Stewart and Ryan
Kohut. Kohut however, had a bad camp which was held at the ONYX on June 30 and July 1 which might have taken him right out of the running for that final DI spot. Andrew
Stewart was a little shaky himself. "I felt pretty good but there's a couple of goals I wish I could take back, but I'm sure that's how tryouts go." Stewart said.
Stewart would likely have the best chance of anyone of possibly bumping Hansen into the number three slot but Hansen would have to more then likely play poorly in his first few
starts of the season and Stewart or whoever that number three guy is would have to be playing phenomenal in the starts he gets. Hansen is also coming off the shoulder injury
that he suffered in the loss at Eastern Michigan last season that ended his season, which appears fine thus far but the real test will be his first game action once the regular
season begins.Stewart deserves his shot at DI but it is not a guarantee and will depend on his improved play in the next prospect camp i nearly August and then the training camp
in September.
If Kohut is being considered then clearly so would Joe Vitale from Eisenhower, who impressed some of the media at the camp impressed at times on Saturday but then at other
times looked shaky. Vitale's play in camp was no doubt better then Kohut's and but would have to perform better overall in future camps. "Game one I came out and couldn't get
the job done" Kohut said Unfortunately that trend would continue into Sunday as well with him getting caught leaving his crease and trying to make the spectacular save but not
coming close.
Different guys have come in at various times in the camps in recent history so all of this could be a moot point if a goalie comes in who should clearly be on DI in either the next
Prospect or tryout camp. In that scenario maybe even Andrew Hansen could be the third guy as unlikely as that may seem today but it would mean the Grizzlies are deep in net.
